The riders of the Handicapped Riders Event are all judged according to their abilities, they are judged on how well they do at their individual level. The equitation class held at Devon is a competition between the champions of the H.R.E. classes. Though their abilities vary greatly, each rider is given a specifically designed test to make a fair and challenging contest. The winner of this class is awarded the Hope Montgomery Scott Perpetual Trophy. Hope Scott, known very well at Devon, was the director of the show for decades. She retired the trophy at The Bryn Mawr Horse Show in the 1930’s. Then, as a long time supporter of therapeutic horseback riding programs, and Thorncroft in particular, Mrs. Scott donated the trophy to the Handicapped Riders Event. Research has shown that therapeutic horseback riding creates better balance, circulation, muscle tone, concentration and self image for the handicapped person.  The joy, satisfaction, and self esteem riders experience through therapeutic horseback riding is unparalled.  People who are confined to a wheel chair or any other "secluded" space because of cerebral palsy, spina bifida, a traumatic accident, Down's Syndrome or mental retardation are given an opportunity to accomplish the feeling of movement, speed, and a sense of liberation as well as contact with natural elements like the wind, grass, trees, and hills. It is only after the abilities of the rider are developed and recognized, that the other "miracles" occur.  One of them is the opportunity for the child or adult who would ordinarily be excluded from competitive athletic events to join, compete and emerge victorious within their peer groups.  The handicapped Riders Event of the Devon Horse Show offers this premiere opportunity for competition.

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s competition,  and we welcome them to the Dixon Oval...
