Horses

Remembering Libby

We Need Your Help

Thorncroft needs your help! We are looking for horses and ponies for our school. We are a mainstream program so they must work for riders with and without disabilities. This is a huge challenge to our work. We are also a not for profit so your donations are tax deductible!

If you have a quiet horse (10 - 15 y.o.) or pony (10 - 20 y.o.) that is sound and can walk, trot, canter and jump a small fence please give us a call or email the information with a picture to Sallie.

We also have a small fund to purchase the right horse or pony.

CONGRATULATIONS MICKEY!

Mickey has been a part of the Thorncroft family for over 12 years. He came to thanks to Margaret Duprey as a 5 year old. Margaret entrusted us with Mickey under the stipulation that we call her when we thought he was ready to retire. Mickey has been an extraordinary gift to Thorncroft and the hundreds of students he cared for. Margaret graciously honored her promise to Mickey... and has retired him to the green rolling fields of her farm.

Where Do Our Horses Go?

A stable of 40 horses is one of the foundations of our program.

These patient, quiet and well schooled horses have come to us from families and friends as near as a next door neighbor, as far away as Maryland, Connecticut and New York. Our horses have had previous lives as hunters on the A circuit, jumpers, dressage or field hunters galloping cross country. When they come to us they may carry a child with autism for a walk thru the orchard, hone the skills of a young rider recovering from a traumatic brain injury, canter cross country with a lively teenager, or teach a young adult her first “half pass”. We try to offer our horses the same haven of peace and healing that we give our riders.

And where do they go from here?

“My child is autistic and I know she is ready for her own horse - it would change her life. Do you know of anything?” This was the perfect opportunity for a TEC school horse named Promise. He was not strong enough for our work, because of a disease called navicular. Now he takes care of Abby... a job he will do well.

Raider, a grey quarter horse, was no longer happy in our program: too many riders and too many hands. But the 4H of Delaware County gave him a new lease on life.

A friend called and told us her pony’s field companion of 11 years had passed....  do we have a pony that is ready to retire? Boing, who after so many years of teaching children earned the right to retire, giving a lonely pony that had lost her field companion a friend to share her green pastures with.

We find the best possible homes for our critters. They have served us well and they have earned the rite to a leisurely retirement.

If you know of a sound, kind horse or pony that you think would work well for Thorncroft please give a call. All donations are tax deductible and you can be assured that your special gift will be well taken care of and loved by many.
